This year, International Jazz Day 30 April falls on Saturday, with our May 1 club night on the Sunday. Coincidentally, our Whanganui Jazz Orchestra WJO (formerly the River City Big Band) decided to present an afternoon concert on the same Sunday.
So, we have a student jazz improvisation workshop Saturday afternoon and a Gala Jazz Concert on Saturday night, the WJO Sunday afternoon and the Mark Lockett Quartet Sunday night…all we needed to do is create a Friday 29 April event and we have a Jazz Festival Weekend. James Paul, local jazz guitarist (many of you know) will host a festival opening jam session at Porridge Watson on Friday. We have invited the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO, the mayor, and everyone involved in the International Jazz Day project.
That is a lot of jazz news…five jazz events over the weekend is quite remarkable, and too much to write about in a one page newsletter! And you must decide which one or more to attend! Please check out the attached program.
Sunday 1 May, 6:30 pm at the St Johns Club
We must say something about our monthly Club Night that is so important to our club. This month we welcome the Mark Lockett Quartet, featuring rising star vocalist Eugene Wolfin and local pianist Ayrton Foote, who returns home again (he played last month with Oscar) to the pleasure of his family and friends. This show played at the Hawkes Bay Jazz Club to great acclaim, and was recommended by their president Ian Hunt. We so look forward to seeing our members out and about on the weekend. Please contact us if you need further information on the festival!
